Queen Victoria's Household
Abdul Karim’s meteoric rise within the royal household created an atmosphere of resentment and hostility, yet the Queen continued to support him, accusing his opponents of racism. Following the Queen’s death he was unceremoniously sent back to India and his family were hounded for any evidence of his relationship with the Queen.
“ The household obviously did not like Karim, they made no bones about it. One of the Ladies on Waiting would refer to the Indian servants as “the Black Brigade”. There was quite a lot bit of racism that they felt”, Shrabani Basu, author Victoria & Abdul.
