Maharajah Duleep Singh

Maharajah Duleep Singh, heir to the throne of the Punjab, arrived in England as a teenager in 1854. He was converted to Christianity and lived as part of the royal household under the guardianship of the Queen, following the British annexation of Punjab. He was subjugated into “gifting” the Kohinoor diamond to the Queen.

The Queen was to become Godmother to his children and he lived the life of a county squire in England until he rediscovered his roots in later life and attempted to regain his kingdom
